Corporate Knowledge At Sea

Empowering your crews when they need it most.

Propel built Full Fathom AI so crew can ask a question in plain English and get an answer from their own approved documents, with its source alongside it. Everything runs onboard, including when the vessel has no connection to shore.

Who this helps

Crew, fleet managers, designated persons ashore and HSEQ teams.

The operating problem

Why the work matters.

The right procedure may be spread across the safety management system, fleet guidance, regulations and equipment manuals. Crew need to find the current instruction, know whether it applies to their vessel and recognise when the documents do not cover the question.

Propel’s contribution

What we developed.

Propel combined practical maritime experience with controlled document preparation, onboard search and answers, citation checks and shore-side knowledge management. The crew can check the evidence while keeping responsibility for the decision.

How it works

Follow the operational thread.

Connect the information, apply the relevant checks and make the next decision visible.

01

Prepare the ship’s library ashore

Approved documents become a versioned knowledge pack. Procedure steps, tables and surrounding context stay together, and onboard answers draw only from that pack.

02

Find the relevant, authoritative passage

Search considers meaning and exact wording. The vessel’s safety management system takes priority, followed by fleet procedures, regulations and reference material. Mandatory procedures are returned in full and in order.

03

Answer only what the documents support

References are checked against their passages, with a separate check that the evidence is sufficient. High, Medium or Low confidence comes with a reason; missing support leads to a clear “not covered”.

04

Work at sea and update in port

Questions are answered locally on vessel hardware. Updated knowledge packs are checked when loaded; sharing with the office follows the operator’s rules, and personal crew details are excluded from the question log.

The user experience

Different roles.
The same evidence.

Dashboards, timelines and work queues make the relevant information available before someone has to ask a question.

Crew member

Read the answer beside its source, document version and uncertainty, without a separate search.

DPA and HSEQ team

Review the questions, sources and checks recorded for each answer to support audits and incident reviews.

Fleet manager

See recurring questions and unanswered topics across vessels, then target the documentation that needs improvement.

Our glass-box approach

What the user can inspect

  • Approved passages and their knowledge version
  • Citation validation and separate evidence-sufficiency checks
  • Warnings, uncertainty and a route to specialist review
The intended value

What this is designed
to improve.

  • Quicker access to approved procedures, even without a connection
  • Fewer routine calls to shore and a clearer route for unsupported questions
  • Support for crew induction and consistent procedures across the fleet
  • A record of sources, checks and knowledge versions for audits
  • A focused list of missing or unclear documentation
How to evaluate it

Test answer support, unanswerable questions, time to useful evidence, disconnected operation and the effect of knowledge updates on representative vessel hardware.

Full Fathom AI is available now. Approved procedures and the judgement of the people responsible remain central to its use.

Joining up ship and shore

Connect the vessel
to the port’s plans.

Electrical load data, equipment ratings and shore-connection procedures held onboard can also help ports understand the power a vessel will need. Combined with voyageGRAPH’s arrival and departure record, this can support shore-power planning where the operator agrees to share the information.
